2004– Timor Challenge

2004 From 14 – 20th May 2004, Life, Love and Health hosted the Timor Challenge in Timor-Leste. The Timor Challenge is a multi-sport relay including a running, mountain biking and ocean canoeing legs held in three spectacular areas of Timor. Teams representing the Districts of Timor-Leste joined UN, Military and other expatriate teams (4 people per team) to challenge international teams of multi-sport ambassadors from around the world. There were 3 races in the series with points given for finishing places for the three events.

For many of the Timorese and International Teams and support crew this was the first opportunity to visit these regions of East Timor. This was the first event of its kind in East Timor and Life, Love and Health is appreciative of the adventurous spirit of those that participated and supported the event.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Timor Challenge. All competitors were given a certificate and prizes such as soccer balls and the winners were given their awards in front of 40,000 people as part of the Restoration of Independence Day concert at the Dili Stadium on 20th May.

Challenge 1 Western Challenge – Batugade / Balibo / Maliana - 14th May
The first Challenge of the series saw some teams tipped out of their boats by the waves at the start line but eventually all got away to paddle 3 km along sandy beaches, past Batugarde Rock to the start of the mountain biking leg behind Batugarde Market. The ride was all uphill for the first 14 km until Balibo Fort and then got easier down to the Maliana plain where the runners finished the race on a long and very warm 13 km run into Maliana Stadium.

Challenge 2 Eastern Challenge – Com / Tutuala / Los Palos – 17th May

The Eastern Challenge started in beautiful Com with a 2.5 km ocean canoe around the Com Reef and Harbour area. The ride was a difficult undulating 40km ride to Fulioro before the runners ran through a cooling afternoon rain shower as they ran the 9km to the Los Palos Football Fields and the end of Race 2.

Challenge 3 Capital Challenge - Dili – Restoration of Independence Day – 20th May

The final Challenge was started by the President of East Timor, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao amidst 10,000’s of people celebrating Restoration of Independence Day in and around Dili Stadium. From the Stadium the runners ran to the Turismo Hotel where the canoeists were waiting to paddle the 3 km across to Cristo Rei Beach, at the base of the prominent Jesus statue. The team runner then ran back to the Turismo Hotel to change with the mountain biker who rode out to the statue and returned to the finish line.
